Looking for nature? Dense forests, hills, mountains and valleys worthy of an artist, a maze of walks and pathways, huge dams and enchanting timber-frame villages make up the tourist's paradise of Sauerland. A place where you can let your soul fly free, where you can restore your energy for the everyday life. And all on Dortmund's doorstep.
On the surface, five large lakes in Sauerland can be used for water sports or relaxing steam boat trips. Beneath the Earth however lies a fairy tale world for the visitor to delve into where water has been forming stalactites in subterranean caves for thousands of years. For colder seasons, 57 skiing areas consisting of more than 170 pistes (with a combined length of more than 1400 km) makes Sauerland the largest ski resort north of the Alps – a fact that will compel any lover of winter sports to fetch their skis or sleighs and get their skates on.
Wanderers will find recreation in the mild climate and countless, well-signposted hiking trails across this ever-changing, hilly landscape. The “flagship” of these is the „Rothaarsteig“ with a length of 154 km connecting Brilon in Sauerland with Dillenburg in Hessen.
Whoever wants to explore the rolling countryside of Sauerland at a faster pace can choose from a network of over 30 cycle tracks (covering a total of 1400 km) leading to fun for the mountain biker and casual cyclist alike, as far as the eye can see.
Sweeping tracks make the region particularly enticing for motorcyclists; children can spend their days exploring the Fort Fun and Panorama amusement parks, and everyone’s tears will flow at the death of Winnetou during the Karl May Festival on one of Germany’s largest open air stages in Elspe.

The tourism rich area of Sauerland consists of four main districts along with many adjacent towns and cities. The Atta Caves, Attendorn
Germany’s greatest natural wonder lies beneath the earth in Southern Sauerland not far from the lake „Biggesee“. On the 19th July 1907 after a controlled explosion at the former Bigge Valley limestone quarry an extremely rare underground formation was discovered. The quarry workers stood, dumbstruck, in awe of this wonder of nature that had taken millions of years to form. Uncountable stalagmites and stalactites, some up to 4 metres in length, adorn the caves and sheets of rock like fine webs hang from the ceiling providing the visitor the a lasting impression of the Earth’s beauty. Using a series of safe and easily accessible pathways, you can wander through this cave system in about 40 minutes (at a temperature of 9˚C). The Atta Caves are open the whole year, but from November through to February, they are closed on Mondays.
